BUBBLING OVER- Give the Man a Break…at least for a little while

You know what really galls me? I was standing at the check out counter of my favorite grocery store and, as we all do when we are waiting for our turn for the cashier to ring us out, I was perusing the grocery store rags that pass as reading material.  You know the type. They usually have extraordinary headlines that are so unbelievable that you have to pick the paper up and turn to the page that the story is on just to satisfy some latent curiosity. “Bat Boy found!” Yells one headline. “Nostradamus’s lost predictions- 3 have already come true!” Screams another. Somewhere between the interplanetary aliens that have been found alive on earth and the killer zombie that is creating havoc on
Park Avenue, I found the one that made me sick to my stomach. I was so appalled by the editorial maliciousness that I didn’t memorize the title only the gist of it.  It was directed at President Obama. In part it stated that “Obama caught in homosexual scandal” with a second picture that stated how crushed Michelle was by it all. I didn’t bother looking for the article as I usually do. I have found that when you go to read these articles they adjust the story so that what you read isn’t nearly as sensational as the headline that drew you  to the story in the first place.
What annoyed me was the fact that as a country we are undergoing the toughest of times. All segments of the population are affected one way or another. With the exception of the soup lines of the depression we are experiencing a devastating economic atmosphere. We elected this man to lead the country with his forward thinking ideas and to pull us out of the stagnant muddy water that represented the last 8 years. Here we are not even into his 100th day and already the fringes of our society are looking to take pot shots at him.  Now don’t get me wrong, I am all in favor of satire. Leno, Letterman, Obrien, Saturday Night live, Mad Magazine, Comedy Central to name a few have no corner on the market of making our leaders look foolish. In this society we can’t take ourselves too seriously. Those of us with “Holier then Thou” attitudes need to be knocked off their high horses every once in a while. While we never will get a level playing field, those of us who care about such things can feel good knowing that the people in power really do put their pants on one leg at a time. Of course I enjoy thinking about them being caught totally surprised coming out of the shower. They would be wearing nothing but a towel which covers their anterior. In my daydream they walk into a room full of reporters as a full length mirror shows off their posterior.  I guess what I am irked about is the fact that we haven’t given Obama enough of a chance to make his stimulus package work. I’ve given the phase “stimulus package” some thought.  Are we really being stimulated? The Dictionary defines Stimulus as “Something that stimulates psychologically or physiologically”. Did you notice that it never said anything about helping us dig our way out of an economic hole? I could think of a number of things that would stimulate me physiologically, but I think it would probably cost me money. It might even be pretty good, but the better ones are probably the more costly ones. Don’t take my word for this, I am working on the basis of the general knowledge of this topic, not on any personal experience- although for the research sake, well, hmmm. . .  However I digress. Before we begin beating up our leaders and making them into a public punching bag, i.e. George W, let’s wait an appreciable amount of time first. I believe in giving any politician enough rope with which to hang himself. When that happens, the flood gates open and he has brought the world of vultures and mischief makers upon himself. Until that time I am certain that there is a Batboy out there that needs to be hit out of the park.
